The Evaluation Manager will develop and implement the Association's research evaluation strategy. The Research Evaluation Manager is responsible for providing consultation and leadership to volunteers and staff that enables the AHA to measure how successfully its knowledge discovery activities are aligned with the AHA mission and goals. In conjunction with their supervisor guides research strategic planning for the Association.
Major Responsibilities Include:
1. Identifies, develops, implements and maintains an evaluation conceptual framework for assessing and reporting the impact of AHA research knowledge discovery activities. In essence, develop a return on investment process addressing outputs ranging from career enhancement and science production to fiscal ROI.
2. Assures that the conceptual framework for evaluation is reassessed at intervals by staff and volunteers to assure it remains contemporary with internal and external expectations.
3. Manages the processes of converting the conceptual framework into measureable metrics which can be collected longitudinally and retrieved for data analysis and reporting from a structured database.
4. Identifies and manages the processes required for on-going maintenance of the above structured database.
5. Manages the processes for creating and producing reports.
6. Identifies processes and activities to enhance professional and consumer reporting of AHA funded research results.
7. Monitors the environment related to open science. Facilitates adoption/maintenance of public access and/or open access policies for publication of research results.
8. Manages processes related to placement of data derived from AHA funded research into appropriate repositories.
9. Determines and communicates the bodies of knowledge to which AHA research has contributed.
10. Monitors and analyzes the cardiovascular disease and stroke research landscape to assess trends and suggest future directions in AHA research funding.
11. In conjunction with the overall AHA Strategic Planning Director, develops and facilitates group processes for volunteer and staff leadership to make planning decisions.
12. In conjunction with the Research Information Manager, provides reports on demographics of research program applicants and reviewers.
13. Maintains relationships with other external organizations to support the AHA research program evaluation effort (e.g., NIH, NHLBI, Howard Hughes Institute, Health Research Alliance).
1. MA/MS degree or equivalent in evaluation, biological or biomedical science, statistics, or similar area of emphasis. PhD desired.
2. At least 4 years of experience in management, administration or equivalent.
3. Strong knowledge of and experience with structuring databases, data analysis and interpretation, expression of results in narrative form, evaluation, assessment and survey management
4. Demonstrated experience in working with ontologies, taxonomies or semantical constructs for organizing knowledge.
5. Demonstrated experience and ability to analyze, interpret, and resolve complex issues in planning, evaluation, marketing, and statistical data analysis.
6. Experience with creating business models desirable.
7. Experience in a scientific research environment.
8. Demonstrated ability in planning, budgeting, assigning, directing, coordinating and reviewing work.
9. Demonstrated written and oral communications skills
10. Ability to interact verbally with public, staff and volunteers, including conducting presentations to small groups and participation in team meetings.
11. Ability to work effectively with staff and volunteers at all levels of the organization.
12. Ability to read, comprehend and interpret policies and procedures governing research programs of the Association and to apply these policies in various situations.
13. Ability to perform word processing and to learn and implement new software applications, specifically Microsoft Office products, Siebel, Grants@Heart system, and Oracle Answers reporting system.
14. Ability to think logically and solve problems.
15. Ability and willingness to travel overnight and work evenings/weekends up to 15%.
