Position Summary
Education interns at the Georgia Museum of Art are responsible for supporting a range of educational and outreach initiatives for museum visitors of all ages, including PK-12 tours, youth and family programs, and community and public events. Summer education interns will be trained as gallery teachers for the museum’s free Art Adventures program, which serves kids from Athens-area day cares, day camps and community centers. Art Adventures visits take place during the week in June and July, and feature interactive gallery tours, games and a hands-on art activity. Under the guidance of education staff, summer gallery teaching interns will learn strategies for engaging groups in object-based learning, facilitate tours and lead students in art-making projects to expand on gallery experiences. This summer’s program will focus on multi-sensory explorations of the permanent collection, highlighting works from the Terra Foundation’s Collections-in-Residence program.

Internships at the museum provide students with valuable hands-on experience in the museum field. Under the guidance of museum staff, interns gain firsthand experience by assisting with various aspects of museum projects and programs. Internships are structured to provide professional experience and growth opportunities, and to give interns an understanding of the art museum as a place of research, teaching, collections management, education and outreach. Past interns have continued their careers in museums such as the Michael C. Carlos Museum, the High Museum, the Creekwood Museum, Sotheby’s, and the Dallas Museum of Art, among others.
