Position is located in Port Aransas, Texas

Purpose

Research Associate will conduct research and provide supervision of research projects in the Nielsen Lab.

Responsibilities

  • Development and implementation of analytical methods, including sample preparation
  • Collaborate within the laboratory and with other researchers on ongoing projects
  • Maintain analytical equipment
  • Writing manuscripts for publication and developing proposals for funding agencies.

Required Qualifications
  • Ph.D. in Environmental Chemistry or Toxicology or closely related field, with at least 3 years of experience since obtaining a doctorate.
  • Experienced in the preparation and extraction of both lab and field-collected samples (e.g., sediment, seawater, biota) for targeted and screening-level analyses
  • Demonstrated experience operating and maintaining an LC-MS and/or GC-MS
  • Experience with analytical method development and implementation
  • Experienced in the detection of various analytes in a range of environmental media (e.g., sediment, water, biota)
  • Demonstrated ability to execute, communicate, and publish independently conceived research
  • Proficiency in biostatistical analyses
  • Commitment to fostering and maintaining a positive and synergistic culture within the Nielsen lab and broader UTMSI community, including a willingness to teach techniques to junior researchers and engage in collaborative projects

Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with shotgun 'omics techniques and data analysis
  • Grant writing experience
  • Strong background in statistics and data analysis
  • Ability to execute, communicate, and publish independently conceived research.

Salary Range

$60,000 + depending on qualifications

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length. This position has the option to elect the Optional Retirement Program (ORP) instead of TRS, subject to the position being 40 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
